Cork ended up under drinks for engineering reasons, not aesthetic ones. Here is the material, told straight.
What cork is
The bark of the cork oak: millions of microscopic sealed air cells per cubic centimetre, each a tiny cushion and insulator.
That structure is the whole trick — light, springy, grippy, and nearly indifferent to moisture, which is why it has guarded wine for centuries.
What the cells do under a glass
Grip: the coaster stays put on polished wood instead of skating with the glass. Insulation: a hot mug’s heat dies in the air cells before it reaches the table. Breathing: the condensation a coaster catches leaves again as vapour instead of souring in a board core.
Every one of those behaviours is the cell structure working. Nothing is coated on; nothing wears off.
The harvest that leaves the tree standing
Cork is stripped from the living oak by hand, the tree regrows its bark, and the same trees are harvested again for decades. The oak woodlands — and everything that lives in them — persist precisely because standing trees keep paying.
Our pressed cork comes from that bark and from wine-stopper offcuts, which is recycling a byproduct of a renewable harvest. Few materials at any price get a cleaner sentence than that.
Buying it without the greenwash
The sustainability is real, so it needs no inflation: no tree is felled, the material is a renewable bark, and the offcuts get used. Say it plainly and the story carries itself.
Then specify like a grown-up — solid, fine grain, stated thickness — because the greenest coaster is the one that never needs replacing.
